Of books and bats and sealing wax

A place where Anthony rambles on randomly or just shares observations.

Or nice pics. Laugh and live.

The teachers are looking at me funny after show and tell last week. The letter of the week was W and Gypsy took a Wonder Woman figure in. But it was her spiel that saw a few eyebrows go up. "This is Wonder Woman. She is an awesome hero. Her real name is Diana and she is princess like Cinderella and Anna except Diana is a princess of the Amazons. Her mummy Hippo-eater made her out of magic clay."
I can’t actually remember ever telling her about Hippolyta (not Hippo-eater) and most of what I have said about Wonder Woman has been in passing but I am kind of proud at how much she’s somehow picked up.
Not bad for a five-year-old.(Art by Cliff Chiang) EDIT: Art is actually by David Finch.

Wonder Woman vol. 2 #210

WAIT, THIS DOESN’T SHOW JUST HOW AWESOME DIANA IS.

This is from ruckawriter's run on WW (the best ever, imho). Medusa turns one of Diana's employees into stone (Diana is a full-on ambassador as well as superhero) and then challenges Diana to a fight. Diana is skeptical, but Aphrodite pretty much says, “Listen, we're not gonna take this shit from Medusa, you gotta fight her.” So Diana shows up pretty ready, blindfold, armor, all that. But it turns out Medusa has manipulated the event to be televised, so that after she defeats Diana, she can look into the screen and turn all the people watching into stone.

Just TAKE THIS SHIT IN FOR A HOT SECOND (all images courtesy of scans_daily)

Then the stuff above happens. YES, BITCHES, DIANA—WHO HAS RECENTLY HAD A SWORD RUN THROUGH ONE OF HER KIDNEYS— TAKES ONE OF THE SNAKES SHE CUT OFF MEDUSA’S HEAD WHILE BLINDFOLDED AND SQUIRTS THE POISON IN HER EYES SO SHE IS BLIND SO MEDUSA CAN’T FUCK WITH HER.

Why? BECAUSE SAVING AND AVENGING EVEN ONE MORTAL LIFE IS WORTH HER OWN GODDAMN VISION THAT’S WHY.

But after that badass “Never?” THIS PHOTO SET LEAVES OUT THE BEST PART. WONDER WOMAN IMMEDIATELY CHOPS OFF MEDUSA’S HEAD. NO HESITATION. NO NEGOTIATION. NO DESTROYING A WHOLE CITY JUST TO BEAT HER UP A LITTLE MORE. CHOP AND DONE.

And then?

DROP THAT MIC, DI.

DROP IT LIKE THE MAGMA-HOT SHIT THAT IT IS.

To Rucka’s credit, this wasn’t no false-ass sacrifice, either. She stays blind AND STILL SAVES EVERYONE’S ASSES.

How does she get her sight back? She does something for Athena and Athena grants her one boon. So what does our Diana do? Ask for her sight back?

NOPE. SHE ASKS FOR LIFE TO BE RETURNED TO A CHILD KILLED BY MEDUSA.

And Athena was like, “Shit, Wonder Woman, you’re better than all of us, I guess you can have your sight back, too.” And Diana’s pretty much like, “Fine, that’s cool I guess, I was still getting shit done without it.”

THIS IS WHY I HAVE A LOT OF GODDAMN FEELINGS ABOUT WONDER WOMAN.

A character who does the right thing because it’s the right thing to do? Yeah, I can see how DC/Warner would find that tricky.

Diana is awesome.

By now you’ve probably already read the news that the current DC plan for Lois and Clark is that they will never date in the new 52.
I’m a little angry and confused.
Now I understand the new universe is different and one of the positives of the new 52 is the potential to explore new themes and ideas. It’s great for writers to re-imagine certain interactions, arcs and backstories.
As such I have no problem with Clark and Diana exploring their feelings for each other. In fact it even makes sense.
But never is a long time. And in particular when it comes to Lois and Clark. After all it’s one of the strongest relationships in comic (and even literary) history. Actually, I would say it’s the VERY strongest in comic history. After all it’s one of the very few where the characters actually became stronger after getting together. Lois has always been strong and independent but somehow became even more so after she became part of a couple. In a union with arguably the most powerful being on the planet she more than held her own and shone even brighter for it. Clark on the other hand became even more grounded and relaxed. Their love was inspirational as it was a case of them complementing each other to a point where the sum was far greater than the whole.
She didn’t take a back seat and quite simply it’s one of the few relationships that didn’t jump the shark after they got together.
Why you would want to throw that out and mark it never to be opened simply doesn’t make sense. I simply can’t believe they’d close the door completely on something that rare that actually worked.
And I don’t believe it. Eventually they will have to find their way back to each other. This is surely just some inflammatory PR to get us talking and ranting.
So I plan to enjoy Diana and Clark but I will NOT lose sight of where his heart has always been.
